Protecting your Telegram account from hacking is easier than you think if you know what to look for. The key is not just installing the app, but setting it up correctly.
Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Your Main Shield
This is the most important step. 2FA is an additional password you must enter when logging into Telegram on a new device, even if an attacker obtains your phone number .
- How to set up : Open Telegram, go to «Settings» → «Privacy and Security» → «Two-Step Verification» (or «Cloud Password»). Create a strong password .
- Important: Remember this password! Without it, you won’t be able to log in to your account if you accidentally log out and don’t have access to your recovery email.
- Password recovery : Telegram offers the option to link a recovery email . If you forget your password, a reset code will be sent to this email.
- Plus : Allows you to restore access if you forgot your password.
- Cons : If your email is hacked, the attacker will be able to reset your 2FA password in Telegram. Therefore, your recovery email should be very secure (your own 2FA) .
- No recovery email : You can choose not to link an email address. This will make it much more difficult to regain access to your account if you forget your password. Telegram offers an account reset after 7 days, but this will delete all your chats and data .
- Conclusion : Use a unique password that you haven’t used anywhere else. If you provide a recovery email, make sure it’s as secure as possible, otherwise it will become a weak link.
- The importance of 2FA : Without this password, no one will be able to log into your account, even if they have access to your SIM card.
Checking Active Sessions
Telegram allows you to see where and when your account was logged in. This is useful for monitoring.
- How to check : In Settings → Devices (or Active Sessions), you will see a list of all devices from which you have logged in.
- Actions : If you see a suspicious session (such as an unfamiliar device or location), end it immediately.
Phone Number Privacy Settings
You shouldn’t show your number to everyone.
- How to set it up : In «Settings» → «Privacy & Security» → «Phone Number.» You can choose who can see your number: «Everyone,» «My Contacts,» or «No One.» It’s recommended to select «My Contacts» or «No One.»
Beware of Phishing and Suspicious Links
Fraudsters often use deceptive messages and links to trick you into giving up your information.
- Be vigilant : Never click suspicious links from strangers or download unknown files. Telegram will never ask for your password or login code through chat.
